Doctor Zhivago - Boris Pasternak

The beginning is a challenge. Not the writing, which is gorgeous, but the structure. After a lovely and wrenching scene where we meet Yura Zhivago as a boy, most of the first two chapters ramble from one character to another, although in fact each scene is linked to the next and the progression does become clear after a while. Still, the combination of apparent rambling and the Russian names (even to one accustomed to Russian names) makes it hard at first to keep track of so many people who are as yet strangers.

No matter. Forty to fifty pages in, the main characters emerge and the story picks up. It's worth waiting it out. I need to sleep now, but I'm already looking forward to reconnecting with Yura and Lara tomorrow....
