The Tide Watchers: A Novel - Lisa Chaplin

This is an ARC, sent to me in preparation for an interview with the author, so I won't rate the book or pretend that I can or should give an impartial review. I will say that I am really enjoying these profoundly troubled characters and the twisty, many-layered plot. Spies and submarines, international politics in the Napoleonic era, and—I can almost guarantee—details of Robert Fulton's career (yes, the steamboat guy) that you never learned in school. But then, are they real? This is a novel, after all.

Sometimes I have to take a break, either to figure out what's happening or to recover from too vivid descriptions of the heroine's abusive ex. But I'm constantly drawn back in, and I can't wait to find out how the story ends.
