The Laughter of Dead Kings - Elizabeth Peters

I so wanted this book to appear, bought it in hardcover the day of its release, read it right away—and was a bit disappointed. The bloom was off the series rose, I thought.

I was wrong. Re-reading it now, after the author's death last year, I realize she was saying goodbye to a set of well-loved characters. She had received her diagnosis by then, passed her 80th birthday, and she wound up their story with her customary wit, creativity, and aplomb. I'm glad I gave this book a second chance. It has amply repaid me.
