The House of Mirth - Edith Wharton, Nina Bawden Beautifully written, compelling, deeply disturbing examination of late 19th-/early 20th-century New York society through the far from satisfactory life trajectory of Miss Lily Bart. Haunting and sad, almost willful in its determination to keep Lily from resolving her problems until one final, shattering moment. Well worth reading, even so.
